We are having a grazing appetizer menu for a quiet New Year’s Eve party at home with 2 kids – we may do the countdown at 7pm.  The is the 3rd way I have posted meatballs, and they are all the same meatball recipe: 1) Norwegian meatballs have a gravy sauce with lefse, 2) Italian meatballs for subs with marinara sauce, and here, 3) the same meatballs in a sweet sticky sauce as an appetizer.  Homemade meatballs are a bit of work but so much better than frozen store bought and you can always double the recipe and freeze extras (raw or cooked) to try one of the other meatball styles and sauces.

Sweet and Sticky Party Meatballs

Ingredients

  • For the Meatballs:
  • 1 small onion, small dice, olive oil, salt and pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c breadcrumbs
  • 2 T Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 t kosher salt
  • 6 grinds pepper
  • 1/4 c grated Parmesan
  • For the Sauce:
  • 1/2 c ketchup
  • 1/2 c jam (mulberry, blackberry)
  • 1/4 c bbq sauce
  • 1/4 c honey
  • 1/2 c chicken stock or water

Instructions

  1. In a saute pan on low heat, caramelize onion until golden brown in a little olive oil, and season with salt and pepper, stir occasionally, about 30 minutes
  2. Meanwhile, mix all other meatball ingredients in a large bowl, including onions when they are done
  3. Form into meatballs and set on a sheet pan. They should be about ping pong ball size, use an ice cream scoop to portion. (at this point you can freeze or refrigerate meatballs (some or all) for later use
  4. Preheat oven to 400
  5. Heat a large pot or dutch oven with 1 T olive oil over medium high heat. Brown the meatballs on one side then flip and do the other side (about 2 minutes per side). Cook meatballs in about 2 or 3 batches so you do not crowd the pan. When done return them to the sheet pan (don’t worry that it had the raw meatballs on them, you will be baking the whole thing)
  6. Place pan in oven for about 10-15 minutes to cook the meatballs through
  7. At this point you can store the meatballs in the freezer or fridge or put them into the sauce
  8. For the sauce, mix all ingredients in a crock pot, and add the meatballs
  9. Serve when heated through
